On Thursday afternoon we got a chance to do some exploration and brain stretching science and engineering activities. Science in the classroom is now moving to a different focus called STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), STEAM (the inclusion of the arts) , and STREAM (the inclusion of the arts as well as reading). First we experimented with some bugs and a launcher to see if we could figure out a way to get the bugs to land on a target. The second activity we tried was seeing how movement works and speed. We used a ramp, wood blocks and a car to see how we could make it go faster, or further. Our final activities we talked about flotation and sinking. We found out that if we placed the little ocean creatures softly on the top of the water many of them would float. We also discovered that we could put the same number of gems in 2 boats, but if we moved all the gems to the back of one of the boats it would sink. Pretty awesome for kindergartners to be exploring such big concepts!
