Hello! I am Shannon Young from Crazy in Kindergarten. I teach Kindergarten at Peralta Trail Elementary School, just outside of Phoenix, Arizona. This is my 9th year teaching. I spent the first 4 years teaching 1st grade downtown Phoenix at a school for homeless and at risk students. I then made the move to AJUSD. I have taught Kindergarten at both Superstition Mountain and Peralta upon SMES closing. Two years ago I also had the opportunity to leave the classroom and join the ELL department in the district. It was nice to expand my credentials; however my heart missed Kindergarten. This is definitely where I feel most comfortable. Early in my career I always said I would never leave first grade. I had absolutely NO interest in teaching anything else. Just the slight thought of it would make my anxiety sky rocket! When I found out about the option for me to teach kindergarten all I could think was HECK NO!!! I believed all kindergarten teachers were either saints or complete crazies!!! Little did I know I would turn into one of those said “crazies” and completely fall in love with it.
I am originally from Toronto, Canada. I moved to Arizona after completing my Masters of Education from the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. I also hold an Early Childhood Degree from Canadore College and a Bachelor’s Honors Degree in Sociology from Nipissing University in Northern Ontario. I have a strong background in teaching homeless and at risk kids in both Auckland, New Zealand and downtown Phoenix.
I am an avid snowboarder, I love to practice yoga, play racquetball, hit the gym, browse for new yummy recipes on Pinterest, sew, refurnish furniture, shop for antiques and watch hockey. I am a big Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks fan! I drink a lot of hot tea, eat lots of cookies and am a French fry connoisseur. I also have an obsession with moose. They are by far my favorite animal. I have been married to the love of my life, Mr. Young for almost 5 years. He is also a teacher, and is part of our 2nd grade team here at Peralta. We don’t have any kiddos of our own yet, but we have a crazy Siamese cat named Asia.
