We had a fun day measuring hot tall, how heavy and what the circumference is on 6 different pumpkins. We also opened them up and counted up all the seeds.
Our first few weeks of taking turns with babysitting Lollipop went quickly. Here is what Lollipop was up to…
“We were watching movies, reading and walking. We were having fun and he is happy to be with me. This is the best day ever!!!!
Me and Lollipop were together and reading and he said that he likes his adventures. We are at chapter 3, Sad-Mad-Bad. It is page 22. I like my day and Lollipop does too!!!
I love being with Lollipop and we are at a soccer game. We are having fun.”

Lollipop and I played and watched movies and this is the best day ever! Lollipop and I read for 30 minutes of Humphrey and he liked it. Now I’m sad because I have to bring him to our class and another kid will get Lollipop and he will have another adventure.

Last week we started reading our One Book, One District book. Friendship According to Humphrey is a lovable story about a classroom hamster who has been forced to share his classroom with a new class pet, Og the Frog. Our class has taken to this story fast and are doing great reading it at home.
Here are our new class pets.
First, we have Lollipop who is a dear sweet hamster who will be taking turns going home with students. The children will need to journal about the time they spend with Lollipop and return him safe and sound the next day. Keep an eye out for Lollipop.
Now, here are our real class pets! We have frogs in our class too! Meet Leo and Rosie! We have already had fun watching them swim, eat and play. There is also a snail who is hiding in the background. Do you see it?
September 15th was International Dot Day and our class had fun being part of all the fun. We read the story The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. We participated by doing different “dot” activities. Watch the video below to see what we did.
If you want to watch a video of the story we read, it is here on Tumblebooks.
We read a play in class about Johnny Appleseed and what he meant to our American History. To celebrate his birthday, Mrs. Miller brought in dried apples, apple slices, apple butter, apple pie (another pie brought in by Rylee too), and we attempted to make apple butter. We also had apple juice and apple cider to try. Before we tried all of our apple treats, we had to vote on our favorite. Here are our results…
We also had fun taste testing.
After tasting, we got to change our results. The apple butter never turned into apple butter so it was just like apple sauce.
This is how our voting changed after our tasty treats.
When I was a kid, I was always too excited to sleep the night before school. Not much has changed with being a teacher. Tomorrow starts a new school year with a whole new class of students. I am excited to meet them all and learn more about them. I have many activities planned to keep them all busy and we we be able to build a classroom community. I hope I can get some sleep tonight!
We have a new class pet in our room. His name is Lollipop. He is a hamster that is going home with a student every night to have a new adventure! This is to help us get excited about reading our “One Book, One School” story “The World According to Humphrey”. “The World According to Humphrey” is about a class pet hamster and his adventures in the class.
The students in our class will take home Lollipop and write in a journal about his adventures. We look forward to hear all about his travels and new friends he meets along the way.
Our class had the awesome experience to collaborate with a Kindergarten class at our school. Students prepared and followed a lesson plan to perform a Close Read with a Kindergarten Buddy. They circled important words and underlined things that were confusing. Each second grader had to read with their buddy and help explain the new vocabulary.
After reading, students wrote down new facts their buddy learned and ventured out into the hall. In the hall there were life size drawings of penguins we were studying. The Kindergarteners were excited to see if they were taller or shorter than the Emperor Penguin who is 4 feet tall. Here are the pictures from our day together.
On March 5, Second Grade performed for the whole school!
We put together a video to show but technology got the best of us and we could not get it to work…so here it is!
Thanks again to everyone who helped make this happen!!
The video of the students singing the songs, is ready to be seen!
Our class participated in a global project called “The Pumpkin Seed Project”. We were asked to count the seeds in one pumpkin and share the results online for other teachers to see. We had 6 pumpkins for our class project and we did more than just count the seeds. Here is a video of our process.
