Playing With Words

On Friday, our class has fun with a word association activity.  We played scoot with words written on index cards.  Students “scooted” around the room to each card and wrote down the first word that came to their minds. 

 

The next part of this activity was sharing our words.  We talked about what kinds of words they are and organized them in a table.  Here are some of our best results.

Math Thinkers

In class we have been working hard on different topics in math.  We have been focusing on measurement this week.  Students are being asked to take their thinking to the next level.  Check out what we have been up to…

Students were asked to use any type of non standard unit and measure items around the room.  Some students used paperclip chains, some used cubes and others used their own feet.

Students needed to record their findings and show how they measured their items.

 

Next, we had a sticky situation.

Students needed to measure gummy worms in both inches and centimeters.  Then, they needed to stretch the worm as far as they could and remeasure.  They also had the find the difference between.  Way too much fun to be math, right?

Reading With Kindergarten

Our class had the awesome experience to collaborate with a Kindergarten class at our school.  Students prepared and followed a lesson plan to perform a Close Read with a Kindergarten Buddy.  They circled important words and underlined things that were confusing.  Each second grader had to read with their buddy and help explain the new vocabulary.   

After reading, students wrote down new facts their buddy learned and ventured out into the hall.  In the hall there were life size drawings of penguins we were studying.  The Kindergarteners were excited to see if they were taller or shorter than the Emperor Penguin who is 4 feet tall.  Here are the pictures from our day together.
