Mad Scientist Day

This week we did Mad Scientist Day.  That means on Halloween we are doing science all day.  We did 6 science experiments.  Some of them were elephant toothpaste, dissolving pumpkins, soda geyser, and an animal experiment.  We had a lot of fun.  We even had some other classes come and their teacher is Mrs. Moore.  It was all on a Tuesday.  Oh, we also did the glowing hands project.  It is when you put on a glove and put some Vaseline over the glove, but only use one finger to spread the Vaseline on one side of the glove or it is messy.  We had fun and we had fun with the other class too.  By Sara and Dulce

On Halloween we did Mad Scientist Day.  On that day we did 6 experiments.  Here are some of the experiments we did soda geyser, elephant toothpaste, and dissolving pumpkins.  for the soda geyser we put mints into the soda.  For the elephant toothpaste we mixed chemicals together.  Last for the dissolving pumpkins we put pumpkin candy into vinegar, cooking oil, water and baking soda, and water.  Then we watched what happened.  By Shyenne

Finch Adaptations

We did an experiment.  We tested out adaptations that finches have to survive.  The materials were chopsticks, tweezers, forks, straws, and tooth picks.  Those were like the beak of the finch.  We had one minute with each tool.  We had to try and take beans, rice, and pasta out of a bowl.  It taught us how the birds use their beaks to eat.  Some beaks are small, long, sharp, and stubby on the finch.  We learned about Charles Darwin and how he came up with adaptations because of the finches.  By Farrah

We did a finch experiment.  It is when you use tools to pick up spaghetti noodles (worms), beans (bugs), and rice (seeds).  Then we used different tools, forks, straws, tweezers, and chopsticks, for the different beaks of the birds.  That was our experiment.  By Gwen

Global Cardboard Challenge

One thing we did in 4th grade before we left for fall break was Cardboard Day!! We did it on a Thursday.  It was exciting!  A lot of people were creative.  Cody made the funniest game.  He made one where he would put a sign on the box that said free candy.  After the person opened the box to get free candy he would pop out of the box and scare them.  It was really funny.  Everyone could invite their family members.  A lot of people came! By Adeline

What we did for Cardboard Day was we made an arcade with cardboard.  We made \everything out of cardboard and tape.  We got to play other people’s games.  Our parents even came to play our games.  When we made the game it was very fun.  By Ernesto

On Thursday we made an arcade.  It was made out of cardboard.  We had the whole day to build it and it was really fun.  My friend helped me make mine. I got some candy and I shared it with my friend.  Only two classes made arcades.  It was us and Mrs. Moore’s class.  We went to lunch and came back.  It was almost done when we came back.  We cleaned up and got to go to the other class to play.  They came to my classroom too.  We played.  Kid’s families came to play too.  They were really happy.  It was really fun to play but it was also hard.  When it is hard you should not give up.  That is why my friend helped me and I helped her.  That is what we did for Cardboard Day. International Peace Day

This week was International Peace Day.  That is when you celebrate peace.  We made some peace pinwheels.  That is were you color a piece of paper and make a pinwheel.  We put them outside in our 4th grade garden.  Another thing we did for Peace Day was a peace packet.  We got to write on our packets how we were going to spread peace.  We did more activities in the packet too.  The last thing we did for International Peace Day was we did a sidewalk chalk peace path.  We got to draw pictures and write on the sidewalk about peace.  That was fun!  Mrs. Moore’s class joined us.  We got a little messy with the chalk.  There were a lot of pictures out on the sidewalk.  By Adeline

For Peace Day we did chalk writing on a peace path.  The peace path was on the side walk.  We got to write something nice to make this school look nice.  We wrote famous quotes about peace.  We did a peace packet.  It had work, like always, but it was fun because it had a comic that you made your own.  There was coloring and other stuff too.  We did a peace pinwheel.  We got to put them outside.  It was windy and they worked.  By Alexis

We did a Skype about Peace Day.  We Skyped with Alaska.  The other class had a hyper doc to show us.  They hyper doc had videos and pictures.  We talked about how we can be kind and not have any fighting.  We talked about what peace means to you.  The other class from Alaska showed us posters and books the students made.  Mrs. Moore’s class joined us for the Skype.  Peace Day is on September 21st, so don’t forget to do something kind on Peace Day! By Ashley

We had a peace Skype yesterday.  It was with Alaska.  It was fun.  They showed up about peace for them and a video about peace too.  It was cool.  Also they talked to us about peace a lot.  I had fun, everyone did.  By Alley

OREO Challenge

Today we did the OREO Stacking Challenge.  First, Ms. Brokaw explained what we were doing and she put us into groups.  Then, she gave out Oreo cookies.  We each got two tries to stack the Oreo’s as high as we could.  We started the OREO Challenge.  We got a paper that has all the questions on it.  Ms. Brokaw had a list on the paper to see who got the most Oreo’s in a stack.  We went back to our seats to write down our answers.  We went back to the carpet and Ms. Brokaw called our names to stack the Oreo’s again.  Sara won!  It was so much fun today!  By Emily R

We did the OREO stacking challenge to see how high we could stack Oreo cookies. . We has to write on a piece of paper our guess of how many we could stack.  We had two tries.  At the end we figured out who stacked the highest.  When you stack you can only use one hand.  Then we came in the back of the classroom so we could try to see who could stack the highest in the whole class.  It was just for fun.  You should try to do this at home too.  By Ernesto

Tonto National Monument Park Ranger

Ranger Jen came last week.  She was excited because she hadn’t been to any schools yet this year.  She came all the way from Tonto National Monument.  She showed us the animals that live there and she even told us what a vertebrate is and an invertebrate is.  A vertebrate is an animal with a back bone and an invertebrate is an animal that does not have a back bone.  She taught us different kinds of adaptations.  We played a game.  She put pictures on animals on our backs and we had to ask our friends questions about the animal.  I guessed mine right.  I had a snake.  The game was really fun.  We played three rounds.  Then she told us what was in her box.  It was a skull.  It had really big teeth and looked kind of scary.  She was really great.  By Ruth

Ranger Jen works at Tonto National Monument.  We learned about vertebrates and invertebrate animals.  We learned all about vertebrates where she works.  She told us a song about adaptations.  Ranger Jen showed us some skulls of animals.  The first skull she showed us was from a warthog.  Ranger Jen showed us a game we had to guess the animal on our back.  Ranger Jen is so funny and fun! Mystery Skyping in Fourth Grade

This week we did a lot of fun things.  We did three Mystery Skypes.  They were with Texas, Wisconsin, and Kansas.  A Mystery Skype is when you call someone on a big screen on camera so you can see each other.  Then you can ask questions to the person you are talking to until you can guess where their right state, country, city, or whatever.  We also had Mrs. Moore’s class come in to have all of the kids do the Mystery Skype.  I know that it will still be fun the rest of the days of school until the last, last day of school.  By Sara

Something we did in 4th grade was 3 Mystery Skypes.  The First one was from Texas.  First, we called the person that was the Mystery Skyper.  We were guessing her state and it was Texas.  She was talking about The Alamo, that is where she works.  We were asking about The Alamo and the hurricane.  The second was Wisconsin.  First we were getting ready for the Mystery Skype.  We has to get the maps out.  We called her and she answered.  We guessed it was Wisconsin.  The third one was with Kansas.  We got Mrs. Moore’s class to come play with us.  We were getting ready for the Mystery Skype.  We were being quiet because they did not know what our state was.  We guess their state was Kansas.  By Emily R

Dot Day

Last week we celebrated Dot Day.  First we read The Dot.  It was a story about a girl.  The girl thought she couldn’t draw but her art teacher told her to start with a dot.  When she was finished it was a dot.  The teacher told the girl to sign it, so she did.  The girl found it on the wall and it was in a fancy frame.  We also colored a dot.  Mine looked like a jesters hat.  When I put it under an app called Quiver it looked like a planet.  It was so weird!  Last we painted a dot.  My dot looked like Jupiter but green and it had blue and dark green, pink, and orange.  We wrote a story about our dot.  Mine was about someone homeless.  By Shyanne B

We did DOT DAY!  We were going to do Dot Day with Ms. Brokaw but she hurt her leg so we went in Mrs. Moore’s class and did Dot Day with her.  The first thing i did is the one we had to color a big dot and then when we were done coloring we asked Mrs. Moore to make our dots look 3D.  Then when we were done with the dot we got to paint a small dot.  We went to the table and then we painted it.  When we were done painting we let it dry for the next day.  When we came back on Monday Ms. Brokaw was back too.  We got to write about our dots life like it was a person.  Then Ms. Brokaw called us for our picture frame.  When we were done we had other work to do.  The next day some of our dots were gone but we heard Ms. Brokaw say she grabbed our dots to put them up on the bulletin board. By Dulce

We did Dot day.  We stayed with Mrs. Moore.  She was so kind that she let us stay with her.  We painted dots and I helped Mrs. Moore.  Mrs. Moore has this app that it looked like our dots came off of the paper.  Mine looked like an eye ball.  It was cool.  My dot had green, blue, black, and gray.  By Alexis

A Short Week in Fourth Grade

This week in 4th grade we did a failed Mystery Skype.  First we came inside and Mrs. Moore’s class came in with up.  Then we got the computer set up.  Next we were calling the other teacher and it didn’t work.  Finally Ms. Brokaw said we will try it next week.  We went to a Flag Ceremony.  First we has to be there at 9:30.  It was about the Lemonade War book.  They were singing.  Jessie and Evan were having a real lemonade war.  That was funny.  In science we learned about plant parts.  We got our notebook and we added a paper about plant parts.  It was so much fun. By Emily R

Today in 4th grade we went to the 6th grade Flag Ceremony.  They sang songs about the Lemonade War book.  The student of the month was me and I got a paper and pencil from the helpers.  Another thing we did was we did National Read a Book Day.  That is when we read a book and we are very silent the whole time.  We read until the teacher said stop.  Finally we did welcome Mr. Cantrell as the acting principal to our school.  He is new to our school.  Ms. Brokaw let us put some stickers on welcome cards for him so it could be special and cute.  By Adeline

Dancing Raisins, Kindness, and the Solar Eclipse!

This week we celebrated the solar eclipse.  We went in the hall and we waited our turn.  The teacher brought us outside with solar eclipse glasses.  It was really fun.  We also made birthday cards for Jacob because it might be his last year here.  He was told he is going to die and all he wants for his last birthday here is cards.  We also did a raffle.  It started on Tuesday August, 22nd of this week.  Ms. Brokaw picks names out of the raffle and those kids get to use a pen, have a pillow, or sit on a fun chair for a day.  I was the first kid to get the pen.  We also did a kindness chain.  It is when someone does something nice to you, you write it on a piece of paper.  Our goal is to get all the way around our building and into the third grade hallway.  We also did dancing raisins.  We had clear soda and raisins.  our goal was to see if something will happen.  Some groups raisins moved but ours did not. By Shyanne

We did dancing raisins.  We put the raisins in a cup with clear soda.  Then we waited for a little bit to see what will happen next.  The raisins started to move.  Then it started to make bubbles and the raisins went up.  We made some guesses about what was happening.  We are doing a kindness chain.  We write on a paper when something nice happens.  We did a raffle that if our teacher pulls your name out you get a special prize for that day.  Next we did birthday cards for Jacob.  He wanted to get as many cards as he could because this is Jacob’s last birthday.  Last we watched the solar eclipse.  A solar eclipse is when the moon covers the sun and it gets dark.  We need special glasses to see the sun when it happens.  By Ernesto
