Pumpkin Seed Project 2012

This year we participated in the Pumpkin Seed Project. This project was a lot of fun, but it also taught us a lot about different math concepts.

We divided into four groups and each got a pumpkin. We estimated the weight and the circumference of each pumpkin. We then measured each one.

Then we looked inside and estimated the number of seeds in each pumpkin. It’s hard to tell how many seeds are in there when it’s filled with pumpkin guts! After the pumpkins were cleaned out, we looked at the pile of seeds and did a second estimate. This time we could see that there are a surprising number of seeds in a pumpkin, way more than we thought at first.

Each group came up with a strategy for counting their seeds. Most decided to put the seeds in groups of ten, then add or multiply to find out the total in each pile. Once we added all our sums together, we realized that even our second estimates were much too low! Can you guess how many seeds were in our largest pumpkin? We’ll give you a hint: the team whose estimate was the closest still underestimated by over 200 seeds!

  2. I like your blog because you did good exaplaning what you were doing with your pumpkins. I hope we can do something like you did. Mabey you can do something like that again.

  3. I like your idea with the pumpkins. Cute idea. I wish I could do that. It sounds like a lot of estimateing. I like to estimate and I also think that you can mostly do everything with “estimating”.
