We had a great time performing for our family and friends at the Fairy Tale Festival and Carriage Expo.  This was a great way to learn about stories, poetry, and dramas, as well as incorporate descriptive writing.  Take a look.

American History Film Project…Begins!

All year two very dedicated students have been working on the American History Film Project to bring local history to their community.  These girls published newspaper articles and then wrote a script to be filmed later in the year.  Well, later in the year has arrived!  We are excited and so thankful to be able to work with Superstition Mountain Museum and film students led by Russ Young at our high school, AJHS.  The museum allowed us to film on location using the artifacts and buildings.  This helped bring our movies authenticity!  The film students under the teaching of Russ Young will create a quality product.  Thanks to both of these groups for volunteering your time.

Lovin’ the Legos!

Science, technology, food, oh my!  Who knew there were so many different things you could do with Legos.  Our class had a great day learning with Legos recently.  We created simple machines, made stop motion videos, built with them on the computer, designed a bridge to hold the most rocks, and even ate some Legos!  Yeah, you read right-we ate Legos!

Have you ever used Build with Chrome?  This is a great interactive site that lets you build with Lego bricks.  Try it out.

Family Follies-Happy About Habitats

Each month our families get together to give us a chance to show off what we have been learning in class.  This month we all got together to learn about habitats around the world in a little different way.  First, we decorated our room with the weather of the habitat.

Then we created dioramas showing what our habitat looked like.  We made our habitat interactive, though.  Instead of just writing information down and having parents read it, we typed up an informational paragraph about the animals and plants in our habitat.  Then we turned the paragraph into a QR code!  The parents who came used the QR Code Reader on their phones and our iPads to find out the facts.  It was kind of like a mystery.

The best part of the whole day was when we played Kahoot with our parents.  All of the questions were from the information we had on our dioramas.  Some of the students played with their parents and some played against their parents.  Conor won.  He had the most points of all.

It was a fun time learning and sharing with our families!  We can’t wait for our next Family Follies!


The Superstitions: Home to Many

Did you know our community once was the home of several Native American tribes?  My name is Peta, and I would like to tell you some information about some Native Americans that lived in our area of Apache Junction.

Some of these tribes were the Apache tribe, the Hohokam tribe, the Salado tribe, and the Pima tribe.  These tribes all lived in our area.  The Apache and Pima are still in our area, but the Salado and the Hohokam are not because they are ancient tribes.  We know they lived in our area because people have found pieces of jewelry, hunting tools, petroglyphs, and pottery.  “The petroglyphs are figures of people and animals,” said Jim Swanson, a local historian who volunteers at Superstition Mountain Museum.  Jim Swanson allowed me to interview him about the history of the Native Americans in our area.  He also said that the Native Americans used petroglyphs to tell stories and remember historical events.

Benjamin Franklin is a god of smartness, creativity and a founding father of America. He worked harder than a beaver building a house for a giant because he traveled many places. He also had to fight for justice, not in a physical way, but using his skills as an engineer and courier. He was one of the founding fathers of America and deserves respect all over the world! Benjamin Franklin died of a sickness during his grand children’s play…sad.  You can find his tombstone in ‘Christ Church Cemetery in  Philadelphia.

Constitution Week Fun

Well, we just finished our annual Constitution Week festivities.  All week we learned about important events leading up to the founding of our country and some important US symbols.  It was great fun and everyone learned so much.  We ended the week with our Family Follies event.  We had most families come and see the students present their projects, perform the Pledge of Allegiance in sign language, and a skit on the history of the Star Spangled Banner. Afterward, we enjoyed some patriotic snacks.

On Constitution Day, September 18, our class honored the signing of the Constitution at 1:00 by a Ringing of the Bells Ceremony.  Each student in our class spread out throughout the school with a bell.  At 1:00 we rang the bells for one minute. Much of the school came and listened to the ringing of these bells.  It was a very touching experience.

We showed our patriotism to family and friends by learning about the founding of our country and ringing the bells.  We also say the Pledge of Allegiance every school morning, standing straight and tall with our hand over our heart.

My name is Campbell. This page is about the U.S Constitution. The reason I’m writing about the U.s Constitution is because I did a presentation on the U.S Constitution during my class’ Family Follies Day at school. I used orginalzational features in my presentation to gather information.

Here are my facts about the U.S Constitution.

 

Some of the people who took part in making the U.S Constitution were, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington. The U.S Constitution is the highest law in the United States of America.The Constitution created the federal government. The Constitution states the rights of people living in the United States and is written to protect the rights people in the United States.

Bristle Bots: An Electric Beginning

So, we all know electricity is everywhere and we would have a hard time living without it, But do you know what electricity is and how it works?  No?  Well, sit back and enjoy!

Electricity is the flow of electrons that have moved out of its path.  The electrons normally just kind of hangout around tightly packed protons and neutrons.  The magic of electricity doesn’t happen until you give it a pathway to flow called a current.

Our class has been learning about electricity so we can understand how bristle bots work.  Basically, a bristle bot uses a closed electrical circuit to power the motor that causes the bristle bot to work. 

Using a pager motor, two wires (the current), and a double A battery (the electrical source) we made an electrical circuit.  We hot glued this to two toothbrushes.  Then we had to put our personal stamp on it and added pipe cleaners and google eyes.  Wah-la!  The birth of a bristle bot.  Take a look:
