Spelling Bee

I was in the spelling bee today. I got to the sixth round, but then they had to figure out who was going to be fifth and sixth place. So, I got to go to the seventh round.

Last year, I got to the second round in the spelling bee, I froze because I didn’t know the word that the teacher told me to spell. I was really happy today when I got past the second round.

I tried again this year even though I froze last year. I felt really happy that I tried again.

Have you ever been in a spelling bee?

How did you do?

Have you tried to try again at something you didn’t do so well in?

How did you feel when you tried again?

    Dear Ethan,

Good for you for giving it another try! Every time we try, we get stronger! What were some of the words you spelled? Did you know the words, or did you just have to guess?

Sometimes when we get nervous we freeze. That has certainly happened to me in my life. What I do to help myself will probably sound funny, but it is the truth… I breathe! It works like a charm! I take a BIG breath in through my nose and sloooowly let it out of my mouth and …I’m calm, my brain opens us, and I’m back in business! Try it sometime if you need it.

Whenever we take timed tests in my class that’s the first thing we do. Throughout the test I say, “Take a deep breath in and calm yourself.”

Again, good for you for getting so far. The real win is the growth you made as a person! Go Ethan!

Have a wonderful holiday break! Say hi to Davo for me! I miss him already!

    Your pal,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

      Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I forgot what the words I spelled are, but I know what the word that got me eliminated. The word that made me get eliminated was “Antelope”, I spelled “Antolope”. I knew some of the words, and on some I just gave a guess. In the spelling bee I took a deep breath when I got stuck on words, it helped a lot.

The last I read, Davo was with Parsa. I don’t know where he is right now, but I will tell him that you said hi.

Ethan, Good going! It takes lots of courage to try again! And YOU did it! Great job. When I was young, I always gave up when things got too tough. It is embarrassing to remember. But, as I got older, I found that I had lots of courage inside of me and I began to explore many things that “scared” me before. It’s fun to get over that fear and to succeed! Sometimes I don’t succeed, but, hey, that’s ok too because I tried! I am an occupational therapist from Massachusetts – but I am vacationing in your lovely state of Arizona right now! I will share your blog with my students. They will love it!
