Digital Citizenship, Internet Safety, and Blogging Guidelines
by Tracy Watanabe
What does it mean to be a “good citizen”?
What does it mean to be safe?
Behavior Expectations
When I was growing up, there were expectations my parents had of me for my personal safety:
- Ask permission before going somewhere.
- Don’t talk to strangers. — (With the exception of my parents/entrusted adult being aware of the conversation.)
- Ask for help when I need it.
- Be polite and use good manners.
- Help others when I can, and add to their lives.
These are the same expectations I have of my own children for their interactions in our physical community and our digital communities.
How can we be “good citizens” and safe on the Internet?
How can we be safe on the Internet?

I think one of the most important internet guide lines is to never give your first name, last name, address,or any personal information.
Hi Ariana,
I think it’s okay to give out your first name, as long as it is not a unique first name. I’m more concerned about protecting students’ last names on the Internet, as well as their address, phone numbers, etc.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
we can only use our first names not our last names
no useing text talk don’t use capital letters
Hi Jordan,
Good points. Text talk might be appropriate with friends, but not on a blog where anyone can read and respond.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Do not post your address, phone number, or email address on the blog.
Hi Meghan,
Good points. Thanks for sharing those!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
We should be nice and respectful to citizens on online games and websites. Treat the other people online the way you would like to be treated. We can be safe online by not talking to strangers online. Only talk to the people you know on the computer.I don’t think you need to change anything on this blog because it says everything about being safe on the internet so the blog is fine. It doesn’t need to change.
Dear Katriel,
Thank you for taking the time to compose a quality comment with details supporting your thoughts, and for using correct grammar and punctuation.
I like that motto: Treat others online the way you’d like to be treated.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
always write in full sentences and words- no “text talk”
Hi Tianna,
I agree, using complete sentences is important.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
One of our guideline rules can be to never post something that could hurt someone’s feelings because then they will try to start a big fight that will be filled with rude comments. that’s what I think but there is about 29 others in the class so everyone else’s comment should be read
Dear Eric,
You brought up a very good point. It’s important to be respectful in all circumstances, especially when we disagree with others. It’s perfectly fine to disagree with someone’s opinion, but to engage in a respectful conversation about the opinion, and not the person, is important. Do you have ideas for how that can be done?
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Don’t be rude! Do not cyber bully!
Dear Kyle,
Rudeness is a form of bullying, and that is something that we should not tolerate. Take a look at Eric’s comment above and the response I gave him. Feel free to answer the question I asked Eric. I’m curious about your ideas here.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Parents should not say their child’s last name.
Hi Lizbeth,
That’s a good point. Sometimes it’s accidental because they are use to saying their last name, but we need to make them aware of this for their child’s safety.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Don’t put your last name or where you are going and don’t put caps when you are typing.
Dear Kendra,
It’s very important to not post where you will be later or where you are. It’s okay to say that you enjoyed your event after the fact, but still be cautious about giving too much detail.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
I think that you should talk about NOT trusting everything because that can also cause stranger danger. We need safety.Thank you.
sincerely,jacob
Dear Jacob,
You bring up a very good point. We should not trust everything we read on the Internet, nor believe everything someone tells us on the Internet. If you are ever in doubt, ask a trusted grown up.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
when you are posting you should not use text talk. Also you should not bully or post mean comments.
Dear Mckayla,
Being respectful and kind is very important. Thanks for sharing!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
One good guideline is Don’t put your whole name on any website and don’t write with all caps if you do someone will write something mean on back to you and one last thing don’t post any picture of someone without asking.
Dear Alexander,
You shared some important Internet safety tips. I’m glad you reminded us about not posting a picture of someone without asking permission. Do you think that one is often forgotten by people?
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
never give out your email password or phone number.
Hi Alexia,
Your email/Internet passwords should always be secured and not shared with others, even your best friend. However, it’s good to share those with parents/guardians.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
we should post on what we are planning to do later on in the year and how we should act on blogs and be good bloggers
Dear Meghan,
I think that’s a great idea. What would you like to do later in the year? Could you create something to teach others how to act on blogs and be good bloggers?
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
we should put like the projest we do in class i say what we lerned that day
Dear Jordan,
I like that idea of sharing what you are learning and the interesting projects you are doing. I think others would want to read that.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
ask permission before you go somewhere.
Please remember to use your first name and not your last name on your comment.
Thanks!
Mrs. Watanabe
Hi I think we all should be good citizens & and I think that safety guildline is helpful and and people should not cyber bulling that is what I think
Hi Victoreya,
Thanks for sharing!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
On our about page we should put our class names[not our last names]and maybe a picture of our class!{smiley face}
Hi Ariana,
You wrote a good comment, but it’s on the postabout Internet Safety, instead of the post for the About Page.
Thanks for sharing!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
to be a good citizen is to be nice and respesful. For our guidelines we should put NO last names.
Do not give out private info
Hi Toria,
Those sound like good guidelines.
Thanks for commenting!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
We should have on our blog,to not put your last name, check your spelling before you send anything.
Hi Jasmine,
Checking your spelling is important to communicate well with others.
Thanks for sharing!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
and put pictures to show them what we did on that project
Hi Jordan,
Did you mean to share this comment on the post about Internet Safety or on the post for the About Page?
Thanks for sharing!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
never say something that hurts someones felling or offends someone.
Hi Tino,
That sounds like a good thing to follow to make sure you don’t offend anyone. Do you think it’s okay to respectfully disagree?
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
No bulling.Or if someone post a comment that is boring don’t tell them that it is boring.Because that is being a bully. It can also hurt their feelings because they might be proud of what they posted but, then they will feel bad.Plus someone else might think the post or comment is good.
THE END.
Dear Zayden,
You make a very good point that people should be proud of their efforts and we should respect each other’s opinions. Do you think it’s a good policy to make comments on things we agree with or on things that we find interesting?
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
