Tonto National Monument, A Field Trip Of A Lifetime!

Tonto National Monument Field Trip!

Today we went to Tonto National Monument. The bus ride there and back was 1 hour and 30 minutes each way. When we arrived we were able to use the bathroom. After, we split up into two groups. One group was with Ranger Jen and the other group was with Ranger Will. Our class went with Ranger Jen and Mrs. Brokaw’s class went with Ranger Will. With Ranger Jen we talked about the group called the Salado. The Salado lived 700 years ago in Arizona. We talked about how the Salado got water from a spring instead of the Roosevelt Lake that was about five miles away. The Salado used the insides of a Saguaro Cactus to build the roof of a Salado’s home. They also used Prickly Pear Cacti pads as a delicious food source. After that we went down to an area where we drew what we learned from her and waited for Mrs. Brokaw’s class. Then, we ate lunch. Next, we swapped Rangers. When we went with Ranger Will we went in a room where we talked about what an artifact is. Next, we started to hike up the mountain and took a few breaks. We went up the mountain because we went to see the cliff dwellings. Ranger Will told us to find an artifact, a fireplace, a Saguaro Cactus roof, and a handprints. Then, when we were done we went down the mountain. Finally, we said our goodbyes and thank yous to Ranger Will and Ranger Jen and headed into the bus.

A Blog Post About Tonto National Monument

The things we did on the field trip were hike the mountains to the top to go to the cliff dwellings, and they told us that they used to be families in each room. They said that scientist said that there used to be 20 rooms and each family would be in one room together. The scientist said there used to be three people in the room that was a family. We also learned about plants. They were Saguaro cactus, Jojoba, Banana Yucca, Prickly Pear Cactus, and Brittlebush. Those plants all have uses. We also learned about irrigation. There are 3 different types of ways to irrigate. The bus drive was over 3 hours total.

On Wednesday, December 20, we went on a field trip. It was a lot of fun. We learned about a bunch of names of plants, and we got to draw some of them. My favorite was the prickly pear cactus and the saguaro cactus. After that we sat down with Ms. Brokaw’s class, and we ate lunch. Then we hiked up a mountain to go see a village that the people of the past made, and it is 700 years old. zit was easier getting down than up.

Tonto National Monument

Yesterday we went on a field trip to Tonto National Monument. We saw how people lived there. We learned how they got water and food.They told us that they were farmers. They said they planted plants and used water close to where they lived. We got to go in one of the houses that were there that they lived in. The bus ride from school to Tonto was about 90 minutes over there and back.The bus ride was more than 3 hours.

Science Fair – Blog Post

On December 7, 2017 we had a science fair. The categories were most realistic, most creative, best overall, and neatest work. The names of the judges were Mr. Brave, Mr. Stern, and Chief Kelly. My animal for the science fair was an ostrich. How I did my habitat was by building my own ostrich and painting it pink and black, I put clouds around, I put a sky, I also put some foam balls to be the eggs for the ostrich, and last I also put trees and plants around. One more thing I also wrote facts about the ostrich. We also looked around to look at other people’s animal habitat. My favorite ones were Destiny’s, Emily’s, and Peyton’s. I really liked their details they put in. Peyton put the quills as toothpicks for the porcupine. Emily did the ice as foam and her water or ice clear blue. She had penguins. Destiny had a seal and I liked how she put the water as Play-Doh. She used white rocks, and she also used a plushie to be an arctic harp seal. She also used plastic snow trees. That’s what I did and saw!

On Thursday, December 7, fourth grade had a science fair. It was a lot of fun. There were three judges, and their names were  Mr.Bravo, Mr.Stern, and Chief Kelly. The trophies for it was Neatest Work, Most Creative, Most Realistic, and Best Overall. It was a lot of fun, and my favorite part was when the judges picked their favorite one for each place. That was the science fair.

Science Fair

On Thursday, December 7th, we finished a project of a animal habit. We had to get a shoe box and put the stuff in it so your animal can survive. After we were done, we all went to the cafeteria. Next we went to a table then put our project down, and finally the judges came around and looked at ours. At the end we sat down on the floor. Then the teachers named the winners. The awards were best overall, most realistic, most creative, and neatest work. It was a lot of fun.

The Science Fair

Today we had a Science Fair. There were four categories with three winners in each. The first category was Most Creative, the second category was Most Realistic, the third category was Neatest Work, and finally the last category was Best Overall. I won first place for Most Realistic. We were able to take photos with our phones. The Chief of Police also came to judge our boxes. After the fair was over we went outside to play.

A  Blogpost About The Science Fair

There were four different categories and they were Neatest work, Most creative, Most realistic and Best overall. My habitat was a seal I used felt construction paper for the sky and blue play doh for the water. I also put a stuffed seal for the animal for the habitat and rocks also trees. The judges were Mr.Brave, Mr.Stern, and Chief Kelly. We walked around to see other people’s habitats and they were good. We also saw Christina’s geko. The ones I liked the most was Anahi’s, Leslie’s, Sophiah’s, and Dominic’s. That is the thing that I did at the science fair!

Snowflake Bentley

Snowflake Bentley was home schooled until he was 14. When he was 14 he wanted to explore the world. He loved the bible verses Job 38 “Treasure of the snow.” He found out that not all snowflakes look the same. There was never a duplicate of one snowflake because all snowflakes are different. He understood that snowflakes were “a miracle of beauty.” He said that it was too bad this beauty should not be seen by others.

Snowflake Bentley

Wilson Bentley was born in Feb 9, 1865. In the text on a website called Wikipedia the text says, “He first became interested in snow crystals as a teenager on his family farm.” The text also says, “He tried to draw what he saw through an old microscope given to him by his mother when he was fifteen.” The text also states, “The snowflakes were too complex to record before they melted, so he attached a bellows camera to a compound microscope and, after much experimentation, photographed his first snowflake on January 15, 1885.” The text also said, “Wilson Bentley would capture more than 5,000 images of crystals in his lifetime.” Those are my facts that I learned!

Facts about Snowflake Bentley

Snowflake Bentley’s name is actually “Wilson Bentley”.  “Snowflake Bentley is popular because it was made about his life and got a medal in 1999”. “Snowflake Bentley was born on February 9, 1865 and died of pneumonia on December 23, 1931 after walking six miles during a blizzard at his farm”. “Snowflake Bentley was a photographer  for snowflakes to see what they look like and he said,“every snowflake is different”. He first became interested of snowflakes when he was a teenager.

My first fact is that snowflake Bentley or Wilson Bentley his name was actually Willie Bentley. The article states, Wilson (Willie) Bentley  was born in 1865 and died in 1931. My next one is that no snowflakes are the same. He said,” no snowflake was an exact duplicate of any other snowflake!” My fourth fact is that he went to a public school when he was 14. The text states,”at age 14, then he attended public school.” My last fact is that he started drawing snowflakes at age 15. The story states,” At age 15 he began drawing snowflakes.” That is my 5 fun facts.

Phoenix Art Museum

Today we went to the phoenix art museum. At 8:35 we went outside to get on the buses. We were split up in three different groups. One was green in green you go with Mrs. Moore. The second group was the pink group which you go with Mrs. Greer. The last group was orange which was Mr. Ortega’s group. On the bus everyone was talking to their partner, all the way there. When we arrived at the museum, we went to the entrance. Next, we found tour guide. Then we started walking with our guide and our group leader. Our guide showed us so many things. First we saw a lot of pictures painted by this guy named Alexander. Next we saw optical illusion. Then we went down a hall with 25 thousand butterflies. Next, we saw a hot mess, and it was called hot mess. One of my favorites is Mass it was like floating burnt wood. My favorite was Fire Flies. They were floating lights and mirrors all over and it was all dark. We had a lot of trouble getting out. Our first step in it looked like we were going to fall. On our way back I didn’t sit next to any of my friends, and everyone was singing a song except me, Torrin, and Peyton. When we got back I was so sad.

The first thing we saw was Alexander Calder’s paintings, and we saw butterflies on the wall to represent  things for people that have past away. Someone got married there. There is a lot of places to visit.  We saw the fashion place and  there was a lot of mannequins with fancy dresses. There was a thing called the hot mess, and it is string hanging down from the ceiling. After we saw the hot mess we went around the corner and we saw the string and we got to feel it. They all felt different.

Today my class and I went on a field trip to the Phoenix Art Museum, and I got to be with my friend Maelee. On the ride to the art museum it was fast, and the way back to school was very slow. When we got to the museum we saw many pictures, and the first thing we saw was Optical Illusion. My favorite part was the Fireflies. There were butterflies on and around the walls. I didn’t like the fashion because there was too many dresses. I had so much fun at the Phoenix Art Museum I wanted to stay for the rest of the school day. I was in the orange group. I wished I my friend Candice was too, but she was in the pink group and that was unfair to me I guess but at least I learned new things about new people like George Washington. We saw amazing art and molded artifacts and our guide was funny, and she made us laugh a lot of times, but I really thought she was really really really funny. That is all I have to talk to you about the art museum.

Today we had a field trip it was a lot of fun.  My least favorite thing was the bus because it took the bus a long time to start moving. I think it had to be at least 45 minutes, but my favorite thing there was the Fireflies.  It was cool, and it was a dark room. There were windows on the wall and little lights on the ceiling that changed colors. Out of all the things I saw my favorite was the fireflies some of the things I saw were Butterflies, Fashion, Hot mess, Mass, optical Illusion, and Buddha. There were a lot of things to see, but I didn’t see everything. I am happy I paid, and I’m happy I didn’t miss it .

Geo B Takes Us To Central America!

In 4th grade, we learn about ancient civilizations, so it was perfect when the Geo Show brought us to Central America to learn about the Mayans! We know from the Kahoot, there were about 200 participants, and we were on camera! Here is some of what we learned.

Today we did a Geo show. It was about the Mayans, and it was fun. We learned that the Spanish arrived in America around 1520. A building technique is a Corbel Arch, and they built buildings and used the Corbel Arch. The Mayans were excellent at math. Sometimes there were faces carved on the sides of temples.The Mayans never had metal tools. They had stone tools to build with. Also, the structures were built with human power. The artwork is very famous at palenque.

 Mayan GeoShow

Today we had a GeoShow. It was about the Mayan culture and their empire. The Mayans were located in Central America, also known at Mesoamerica before the Spanish took over. They had the most sophisticated writing system. They were defeated by war and drought. We still use some of the same building patterns. For example, Corbel Arch is common building technique. It is also very strong. Stela and Altar is used for religious rituals. Stucco is limestone crushed up and is used as a building material. They have a game like basketball, but you can’t use your hands so it is way more difficult to make a goal. That was our GeoShow.

On November 6, 2017, I learned about the Mayans, and I learned it from the geo show! My favorite fact was when the glyph made pictures to make words. I also learned that the some symbols were for numbers like 5 is a bar and 1 was a circle. Some of the Mayan people used or had stone tools. There were two beaches one was off limits, and one is for people to visit. The artwork is very popular at Palenque. Some of the Mayan people used Stela and Alters. This is what I learned during the geo show!

Growth Mindset and Roz

It is a tradition in Mrs. Moore’s class to participate in the Global Read Aloud. This year over 1,000,000  students in 60 countries are reading a selected book to connect their class with other classes. Our class is reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. About a month ago we started talking about growth mindset. We watched ClassDojo Videos and discussed growing our brains. Here are our signs.


Then, Mrs. Moore asked us if we thought Roz, the robot in our book, has a growth mindset? We used Flipgrid to share our thoughts on the subject.
